Exploring New Horizons
Bringing neighbours back together and helping older New Zealanders thrive independently in their own homes.
Across New Zealand, many older people want to stay independent, remain connected, contribute where they can, and know that someone nearby would notice if they needed help.
But modern life has changed. Families may live in another town, city or country. Neighbours may not know each other as they once did. Transport, appointments, online forms, home maintenance, social activities and everyday support can become harder to manage alone.
That is why we are exploring Virtual Villages / Connected Communities across New Zealand.
Neighbours coming together: A vision of local networks and micro-activities helping Kiwi seniors stay connected.
A Virtual Village is not a retirement village and it is not a physical building. It is a local network of people living in their own homes, supported by community groups, local organisations, volunteers, service providers and simple technology.
This is not about replacing family, government services, churches, clubs or existing community organisations. It is about helping connect them better.
A Connected Community could help local people organise and coordinate things such as:
Local interest groups, coffee meetups, and social gatherings to keep isolation at bay.
Local notices, newsletters, and safety bulletins relevant to your direct area.
Volunteer support, garden help, small home fixes, and simple friendly check-ins.
Coordinated local trips for grocery shopping, community events, and medical appointments.
Proactive wellbeing check-ins and structured peer support networks in the neighbourhood.
Connecting residents with pre-vetted, reliable, and fair local tradespeople and services.
Practical hands-on support for online forms, internet safety, and using simple technology.
Peace of mind for families living far away, knowing local community networks are in place.
Please complete the short form below. We will use your details only to keep you informed about Virtual Villages / Connected Communities and to understand which regions may be interested in future pilots.
Over the next few months, seniors.org.nz is gathering interest from individuals, community groups, churches, clubs, service organisations and local leaders who would like to know more.
Registering your interest does not commit you to anything. It simply helps us understand where there may be interest in creating a Connected Community or Virtual Village in the future.
